Ledger Start

Secure Hardware Wallet Setup

Set up your Ledger hardware wallet in minutes — the safe, private way to control your crypto.

This easy guide walks you through every step: unbox, power, initialize, back up your recovery phrase, and use Ledger Live — with security-first tips so you stay in control.

Quick Start — 6 steps

1
Unbox & verify
Check the tamper-evident seal and confirm the device model before powering on.
2
Power on
Connect the device to a trusted computer or mobile using the supplied USB cable. Follow on-screen prompts.
3
Create a PIN
Choose a PIN you can remember. This protects the device against physical theft.
4
Write down your recovery phrase
Your 24-word recovery phrase is the single most important thing. Record it on the provided card — never store it digitally.
5
Install Ledger Live
Download Ledger Live on your computer or mobile and follow the app instructions to add accounts and apps.
6
Receive & verify
Receive a small test transaction first and always verify addresses on the device screen before confirming.

Protected private keys

Private keys never leave the secure chip. Transactions are signed inside the device so attackers on your computer or mobile can't steal them.

Open ecosystem

Supports hundreds of cryptocurrencies and integrates with wallets and DeFi platforms while preserving private key custody.

Recoverable

If your device is lost or damaged, restore funds with the 24-word recovery phrase on any compatible wallet.

Detailed setup (complete guide)

Follow these steps carefully. Take your time when writing the recovery phrase — errors can result in permanent loss of access.

Step 1 — Inspect and power on

Unbox in a clean environment. Look for tamper seals, unusual stickers, or pre-filled fields. Only power on the device when you're ready to begin setup.

Step 2 — Initialize the device

Choose "Set up as new device" on the screen. The device generates a recovery phrase using its secure random number generator. Confirm that the words appear on the device itself.

Step 3 — Record the recovery phrase

Write each word clearly on paper or the provided recovery card. Consider using a small fireproof safe for long-term storage. Do not photograph, take screenshots, or store your phrase on a password manager or cloud.

Step 4 — Confirm phrase and set PIN

The device will ask you to confirm random words from the phrase to ensure you recorded them correctly. Then pick a strong PIN — not your birth date or obvious patterns.

Step 5 — Install apps & accounts

Open Ledger Live and install the specific cryptocurrency apps you need. Add accounts in Ledger Live for each blockchain and verify receive addresses on-device before sharing them.

Step 6 — Test with a small amount

Send a small test transfer to confirm everything works end-to-end. After you are confident, you can receive larger amounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I lose my Ledger device?

If you have your recovery phrase, you can restore funds on a new compatible device. If you lose the recovery phrase and the device, funds are unrecoverable.

Can someone access my crypto if they get the device?

Not without the PIN and recovery phrase. If a thief tries to brute-force the PIN and fails multiple times, many devices will wipe themselves to protect the keys — still, protect your recovery phrase as the last resort to recover funds.

Should I store my recovery phrase digitally?

No. Digital storage (screenshots, notes, cloud backups) is an attack surface. Prefer physical paper or metal backup stored securely offline.

How do firmware updates work?

Use the official Ledger Live app to update firmware. Always verify update prompts on the device screen and only install updates that are signed by the vendor.

What if I suspect my recovery phrase was exposed?

If you suspect exposure, transfer your funds to a new wallet with a freshly generated recovery phrase as soon as possible. Treat any suspected compromise as high priority.
